For over 150 years coir peat has been a by-product of the coconut industry. It is a natural high quality, protein rich and durable fibre that is environmentally friendly and biodegradable

Coir Peat Aust Pty Ltd was established in 1992 as a horticultural company that supplied coir peat as an alternative growing medium. Through extensive research, Coir Peat Aust Pty Ltd discovered the many qualities of the coconut coir and has patented a method of making it fire retardant

Environmental and physical hazards have always been easily created by oil spills, whether on land or water. In the workplace oil spills have not been easily rectified, or cleaned up using older existing methods, e.g. sand, cement, sawdust or clay etc, which act as an ADsorbent and so a large proportion of liquid spills have simply been flushed down the drain and into the sea.

The Environmental Protection Authority and local councils are forcing industry to look for new lightweight oleophilic environmental products which will ABsorb oils and liquids and can be used on roads or in factories, in wet or dry conditions. As such, Coir Peat Aust Pty Ltd have patented The Oil Eater which is an ABsorbent and unlike clay products, is bio-degradable which leads to low disposal costs as opposed to very high waste costs because of weight. Due to its chemical composition, The Oil Eater is easily incinerated at high temperatures.

A demonstration to buyers showed The Oil Eater to be 4 times more efficient than its counterparts and is many times quicker and cleaner and therefore requires less labour. It complies entirely with both Health and Safety and Environmental Protection Authority regulations.

The key to the success of The Oil Eater is the unique box like molecular structure of every crumb-sized speck of coir peat. This presents a huge surface tension area with capillary action to absorb oils or other liquids into its cellular structure and it does this whilst retaining a non skid ability. Its 36% air porosity allows it to float on any liquid to absorb oil which may float on the surface.

Typical Analysis of Natural Fibre

  • Total Nitrogen (N) 0.55%

  • Total Phosphorus (P) 0.04%

  • Total Potassium (K) 0.19%

  • Chloride Salts (NaCl) 0.06%

Physical Test

  • Air-filled porosity 36% (approx.)

  • Liquid holding capacity is 4.6 litres (approx.) per 1kg dry coir

  • The chemical tests show a pH of 4.98.

  • An electrical conductivity measurement of 167 uS/cm.
